How efficient are solar panels with Solar Fast?

Our panels are 23% efficient, meaning 23% of the sunlight that hits the panels is converted into electricity – it may not sound very efficient, but you can compare it to 35% for coal, 45% for natural gas and 38% for oil-fired power generation.

Once the power is generated, it moves through the system to the inverter that converts that DC electricity into AC electricity that you can use in your home.

The inverter also converts the DC energy from the solar panels into DC energy that charges your battery.

All panels supplied by Solar Fast come with a 25-year guarantee – however they last longer that.

Solar Panels have no moving parts and are made from steel, glass, copper and silicon.

The PV cells are where the silicon comes in, it’s the material that converts daylight into electricity, and that degrades at 0.5% a year.

After 25 year the panel will be performing at 80% of its original output and that’s when a change is recommended.

The only nationwide grant available to install a solar energy system is the ECO4.

You could be eligible if you:

  • Currently have heating with an EPC rating of D or lower.
  • Live in private rented accommodation or own your own home.
  • Live in an all-electric home where biomass boilers or a District Heat Network have been ruled out.
  • Are receiving government benefits like child benefits or income support.
  • Have been referred by your energy company,
  • Are in a household with an annual income of less than £31,000.

Local authorities can also use the element of ECO4 to look at your personal circumstances such as the number of people in the home and at if your EPC rating needs lowering.

If you’re eligible you can get up to £10,000 to fund energy efficiency measures in your home.

Mounting solar panels on a roof in the correct way is integral to how much power they produce.

South facing roofs are the best for solar panels but East and West facing roofs are also perfectly good.

Panels can be fitted to most roofs depending on how they are constructed. For instance, thatched roofs, or the roofs of listed buildings, would not be suitable for mounting panels.

Solar Fast will remotely survey your home before booking an appointment with you to ensure you can have the panels you want.

Solar Panels require very little maintenance as they have no moving parts and will keep functioning for more than 25 years.

They may need occasional cleaning if you live near the sea, have overhanging trees or a lot of local wildlife like squirrels and birds.

Solar Fast recommend ‘bird netting’ to keep your panels safe from any little critters that may want to make nests or chew wires.

Energy suppliers have a legal obligation to offer customers a SEG tariff.

The SEG, or Smart Energy Guarantee, replaced the FiT scheme and allows customers to sell their excess electricity back into the grid.

Tariffs are becoming much more flexible, meaning you can draw from the grid when it’s cheap, and export when you can be paid more.

Battery storage is a fantastic way of saving even more money on your electricity bills.

Once the sun goes down your panels will no longer be able to generate energy, so storing excess energy produced during the day, for use in the evenings, means you aren’t paying peak-rates for your electricity.

Solar Panels work on day light, not sunlight, so they will work during the day no matter what time of year it is.

The light is much weaker in winter, so the panels won’t be producing as much electricity as they do in Summer.

This graph shows the average generation, and consumption, of a 12 panels system.

Solar Panels generally clean themselves.

As they are angled on your roof, the rain, or snow, will hit the panels and clear them of any dust and debris.

Animal dropping can be a bit trickier so it’s always a good idea to have your panels cleaned if you notice they’re not performing as well as they should.

There is no need to obtain planning permission to install solar panels on the average UK house.

Planning permission may be needed if your home is listed or protected in any way – like being in area of outstanding natural beauty or a nature reserve.

Solar Fast deal with all other regulations to do with the install of our solar systems and can advise if planning permission is needed.

The average domestic solar install in the UK is 12 panels.

Solar Fast supply 400-watt panels, so 12 of those could be generating over 4kW, more than enough for the average home.

Learn more about how many solar panels you need here.

Solar Fast supply DMEG MONO-FACIAL 104 Half Cell 410-watt panels for most domestic installation.

These contain 104 silicon half cells, as opposed to 60 or 72 full cells, as this technology improves the efficiency rating of the module.

They are also housed in black-on-black casing, so they look fantastic when placed on your roof.

Any home improvement will add value to your home, and Solar is no different.

The numbers vary depending on which study you look at but, here at Solar Fast, we believe it also depend on the area you live in, the system you have and who’s buying your home.

Estimates on the value a solar system adds to your home vary from 3% to 25%.

Renewable Energy Magazine’s UK study shows that solar increases your home value by 14% on average.

Yes, a domestic solar system will affect your home’s EPC rating, positively!

An average 4kW system can add up to 15 points to your rating meaning it will almost definitely take you into a higher category.

For instance, if your home is low D, a solar system will take it into a low C.

Higher EPC ratings add value to your home.
